Ngwane: Higher Education should help to build a culture of reading, publishing

Cameroon’s ace publisher and literary icon, Mwalimu George Ngwane, who has just published a new book, has called on academics to help promote a book culture aimed at improving reading, publishing and library development skills in the country’s higher education system. This was necessary, he said, for quality education and training.


Speaking at the launch of the new book, titled Protecting Minority Language Rights, in Buea earlier in May, the publisher said the higher education system in Africa should promote a culture of institutional libraries connected to the community, making these libraries functional and relevant to their immediate environments.

Rambler newspaper: You have just returned from the Minority Fellowship in Geneva, Switzerland. What was it about?

George Ngwane: The Minority Fellowship is a Fellowship within the United Nations Office of the High Commissioner that attracts annually actors from an ethnic, linguistic, national and religious minority background.

It has both Russian and English-speaking participants selected from a wide range of competitive parameters. This year I was in the company of Fellows from India, Pakistan, Moldova, Ukraine, Colombia, Iraq, Bosnia and Herzegovina and then Japan. So you see it is like a rainbow family drawn from each corner of the globe. We were made to understand that selected Fellows are those who have been consistent in articulating their country’s human rights issues with a particular slant to minority rights.

After having written what he called his last newspaper feature titled “in dire need of Anglophone media moguls” which was published in some English language newspapers, civil society activist and Chief executive officer of a Non Governmental Organisation, AfricaPhonie, Mwalimu George Ngwane, has shared with Eden some of the hallmarks of his 25 years writing career.

“After the last article, I have had some feedback, people wondering whether that was my farewell feature-writing. Yes it is. It’s been real wonderful because I have been writing since 1987” he said.

The Presidential Elections in Cameroon have come and gone.  Eden newspaper caught up with the civil society actor, writer and PanAfricanist, Mwalimu George Ngwane, for his views on the just ended elections and the way forward as well as some topical burning issues of the moment. He was interviewed in Buea by Eden’s Macdonald Ayang Okung (Published in Eden, Monday, October 31, 2011).

Eden:  How do you assess the Presidential elections that have just ended?

Ngwane: They brought a lot of lessons in terms of ideological focus as presented by the Presidential candidates during their campaigns.  While some of the campaigns were party-based and others were candidate-based, we must not fail to recognize that there was some improvement in the drive to sell ideas and issues through manifestoes to the electorate.

1. The Meeting between Paul Biya and Fru Ndi in Bamenda on the occasion of the Golden Jubilee celebrations of the Cameroon’s Armed Forces was acclaimed by many people both at the National and International levels. What do you say about this meeting?

Form the point of view of thawing the political ice that had loomed over the two personalities for the last twenty years, it has opened the doors for dialogue that hopefully will be based on policies rather than prebends. As politicians and this is a general phenomenon, interested in making electoral capital, it is Mr. Biya who has had the better end of the stick because he met the Chairman in his own terms probably more as a North West Elite than the Leading Opposition.  If Mr. Biya met him as an Opposition Leader then it comes at a time when the Chairman has lost considerable grounds and a time Mr. Biya himself has lost some partners either through jail or through death.

George Ngwane: The Independent Intellectual

Mwalimu George Ngwane is a man of many parts. Writer, poet, peace activist, educationist, political analyst, pan-Africanist, and executive director of AFRICAphonie are all parts of this intellectual machine. Although he could amass easy lucre by simply praise-singing as most Cameroonian “intellectuals” have done, Mwalimu has remained consistent in voicing the peoples’ causes. His uncompromising stance for the people has had dire and sometimes heart-rending professional consequences. Yet, he remains undaunted and his active participation as spokesperson of the Committee for the Participation of Independent Candidates in the Electoral Process in Cameroon stands out as eloquent testimony.
